Cyberbullying in Time of Covid 19 Pandemic

Before when Covid 19 is still not present. We know that children have already started using cellphones, ipods, laptops and computers. Nowadays, due to pandemic and social distancing, children and teens have moved to home schooling which makes it easier for them to access social media. Since teachers use different platforms for this new strategy of studying like Google, Zoom, Microsoft 365, etc., the volume of children and teens using online platforms increases, thus kids who are inclined to bullying probably might experience cyberbullying which is through emails, text messages, etc.

Common Reasons Why Others are Cyberbullied:

  • Family conflicts

  • Teens with the least amount of parental supervision

  • Sometimes comments on social media gives a strong reaction which surge into cyberbullying

Common Factors Why Others Do Cyberbullying:

  • Cyberbullies are jealous to their victims

  • Cyberbullies probably think that their victims deserved it

  • Just to fit in with a group children or teens do bullying

  • Internet most likely is their outlet in getting someone’s attention

Important Roles of Parents To Cyberbullying

As parents we play an important role in our children’s lives. Just like what we taught our children even when Covid 19 is absent, what their attitudes during face to face interactions must also apply to online interactions. We should teach our children on how to be civil towards others either in person or online. This is the main key for us to help them socialize or interact with different people especially of different beliefs. We must talk to our kids and always remind them not to offend others, speak well and be respectful all the time not only when you're talking to them personally but even when sharing words online. And importantly, encouraged our children to speak out. They must speak and share their feelings to those who can help them, because the longer they will keep it on their mind and feelings, the more cyberbullying will affect our children physically, mentally, emotionally and socially when they grow old.

It is hard to fight cyberbullying, but it is good to contend with our children’s destructive behavior toward these networked platforms. Let us help each other to fight this cyberbullying and let us support organizations regarding this for our next generation can live a life full of happiness and peace of mind.
